Montgolfier Celebrations
Date: 21st / 22nd November 2009
Every year on the closest Saturday to 21st November, the 3-4-40 Events Team organise the 3-4-40’s Montgolfier celebrations. We try to create a day of fun and flying based around the idea of celebration; rather than having a very formal day.
We also run two competitions in the 2 weeks leading up to Montgolfier to allow the more competitive of pilot’s amongst the region something to really compete for. These competitions are the ‘Montgolfier Challenge’ and the ‘1783 Challenge’.
In recent years, the celebrations have included:
- A Flyout – held either in the morning or at lunch time depending on the weather. If the weather is good, it’s a great chance to get a flight in before the end of year and due to the lack of thermals towards the end of the year you can even fly all day!
- A Night Glow/Tether – I’m sure there are a number of you, just like me, with an old envelope sat in the corner never to be seen again! Well the idea of the glow/tether is simply to give your balloons a final airing before the onset of the long dark wet winter months.
- An Informal Dinner - we have no set speaker, and try to find a venue that can accommodate us without the need for a set menu and a fixed price.
It’s a great evening to reminisce on ballooning past and look forward to the ballooning future with friends and fellow balloonists.
